Competing Interests

If you were planning to attend the October meetings of both the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Education you are out of luck. They have both rescheduled their meetings for next Tuesday night, October 9. The BOE meeting begins at 7 PM and the BOS meeting at 7:30 PM (and the Board of Finance at 6:30 PM.) Does anyone else feel that one of these meetings should be moved (again) so that residents who are interested can attend both?

Yah, I was interested in attending both but, alas, sometimes the left hand needs to check to see what the right is doing.

I know. It happens to us all the time in the newspaper biz. :)

Dan:

For your readers information, the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance meetings have been scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th since December of 2006 when the Boards had to submit a list to the Town Clerk and Secretary of State's office of the dates and time for its monthly meetings in 2007. October 8th is the Columbus Day holiday, hence the reason the meeting is being held on Tuesday the 9th. In November the monthly Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance meetings have been scheduled for Tuesday November 13th because the Veteran's Day holiday is celebrated on Monday, November 12th. The conflicts are unfortunate, but the dates of these two Boards' meetings were known well in advance.

If it has been scheduled since December of 2006 you would think someone would have known to check that "schedule" before posting to the town web site. You would also think the BOE would have known what the date of their own meeting was before sending home school notices (as late as yesterday) along with letters from the princiapl, and letters and quotes to the local paper all indicating a meeting date of the 2nd. Shouldn't they know when the meetings are?

Yes, Anonymous. I just checked the town's website and it lists the BOS and BOF meetings as being on Monday Oct 8. Presumably, the Board of Ed might not have rescheduled their meeting to confllict if the calendar were correct. As Terry says, he will be unable to cover both so our only local newspaper will only be able to tell us what happened at one of the meetings. This is scheduling is a disservice to the taxpayers of the town.

All the Board of Ed had to do was warn the meeting for tonight (10/2)that was announced in the paper, on their website, on the town website, in the notices sent home from school, etc., as a "special" meeting and all of this would have been avoided. They had up to 3pm yesterday to do this. It is unfortunate they didn't think of that and planned accordingly.

Despite the best laid plans, conflicts do sometimes arise. It's unfortunate that Tuesday the 9th has so much to offer (the Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department meets that night too), but it just goes to show that people who think there's nothing to do in Falls Village are missing out!

Schedule conflicts are as old as time.
Miscommunication rode in on the coat tails of communication.
What I want to know is if Terry and Dan have discussed who will cover which meetings.
Would be a shame if the LJ and FV Blog both covered the same meeting and the other was left unreported.

BEST laid plans ... doesn't appear to be.

Today's Litchfield County Times lists the BOS meeting for this MONDAY night. I wonder how they made this mistake.
